From reliability engineering to wrestling with LLMs, my fourth year at incident.io pushed me harder than I'd expected. We launched On-call, weathered some tough times as a team, and I ended the year diving fully into AI.
Everyone has bad days. Some just hide it better or choose not to share. Hell, I haven't told you the worst things that happened to me in the past few months, but that doesn't mean they didn't occur.
Today, tomorrow, and throughout this week, you'll see many people posting highlights of their 2024 as if it's been the best year ever. Please, remember it's just a highlight reel.
Don't let it bring you down. Avoid comparing yourself to their best moments.
Even if you're going through a rough patch, don't give up.
And once more, don't compare yourself to others celebrating their best moments. Maybe they are doing that to try and lift themselves up - so cheer with them! - and they are actually feeling worse than you.

It seems the [Zed editor](https://zed.dev/) has finally started working on Arch Lunix, so I sat down and gave it a go.
It asks you to log in using your Github account. Log in to what? I thought it would obviously be settings sync, but it's not - they don't even have any immediate plans to implement it.
I think it might be for Copilot.
They implemented very elaborate tooling for chatting with an LLM as a top priority, but they don't consider syncing your settings between computers a priority at all.
This is not an editor developed for people like me.
One surprising aspect of my time off this year has been how much I've needed to sleep.
This last year has been stressful for various reasons, and I suspect my body is trying to tell me to slow down and recover. I definitely need to take more time for myself in 2025, and honestly giving less of a fuck about making others happy over my own self-interest.
I've suddenly made tremendous progress this morning on updating my website: a few warnings to clean up, a smidge of tweaking headers, footers, etc. Then I'll roll it out! I just had a discussion about this a few months ago. They were under the impression that y2k was a ‘flop’. I explained that it was a flop because we spent ten months changing lines of code to accommodate the 2000’s.
Had we done the covid lockdowns correctly, that could have been a flop too.
@Edent@mastodon.social and the most annoying part is that I'd rather go to these events to meet people such as yourself! It's just that they tend to take place in crowded rooms full of people with poor social skills. :(
