A Pinky & Brain spin-off for grown ups that always starts with them sitting tired at coffee in the morning:
Pinky: "What are we going to do tonight?"
Brain: "Same thing we do every night. Try to go to bed early"
And then the whole episode is just about how stuff comes up and prevents them from going to bed early.
You don’t have “burnout,” you have stress-induced neurological decline due to long-term brain damage. Giving it a cutesy name may help you discuss it amongst allies, but it will not demand the recognition you need from medical professionals, your peers, or those oppressing you.
A true warrior always stands at the ready to give assistance, but knows that sometimes the best help is to give someone the time and space to help themselves. Knowing that you are willing to lend your strength is sometimes all it takes for those in need to regain theirs.
Fascinating both for what it says about dev & what it says about statistics:
A gamedev realized Linux users were just 5.8% of their sales, but represented 38% of bug reports.
Then they looked at those numbers closer, and realized. Linux users were not experiencing more bugs. Almost none of the Linux-user bugs were Linux-related. Linux users were simply *more likely to file bugs*.
Their conclusion: A linux port pays for itself bc it nerdsnipes ppl into giving u free QA

Saw a job posting touting “no politics at work” as a benefit.
Mate, I work in #OpenSource. It's _all_ political.
So grab your "no politics at work" and go take a long walk off a short pier.

Exciting news! 🚀 The CFP for #SOOCon24 kicks off TOMORROW, and guess what? We've got an Open Source Software Track! If you're passionate about open-source software, we're eager to hear your ideas. Get ready to submit your proposals! 🌐 https://stateofopencon.com
Just got notice that RIPE NCC will not be funding the #SmallWeb. Not surprising, since we haven’t had a single successful funding application and I’m done wasting my time with this crap.
small-web.org will launch as a commercial service (host your own Small Web place for ~€10/mo) and hopefully that will make Small Technology Foundation sustainable. Since everything we do is free and open, others will also be able to host Small Web places.
Also, you can fund us directly: https://small-tech.org/fund-us
I cannot describe the intense visceral rage that envelops me when someone would rather waste my time with a meeting than simply writing something down. Fucking energy vampires.
People go to Stack Overflow because the docs and error messages are garbage. TLDR exists because the docs and error messages are garbage. People ask ChatGPT for help because the docs and error messages are garbage. We are going to lose a generation of competence and turn programming into call-and-response glyph-engine supplicancy because we let a personality cult that formed around the PDP-11 in the 1970s convince us that it was pure and good that docs and error messages are garbage.
There are multiple definitions of “witch” across cultures over time.
But on #Halloween, this a spooky reminder that throughout history, a witch often meant a woman with opinions and an independent life persecuted by the patriarchy for not fitting in.
there are many reasons I personally use mostly FOSS but honestly a big part of it is just
on the one hand there's software that doesn't have the feature because nobody's gotten around to implementing it yet
and on the other hand there's software that doesn't have the feature anymore because someone intentionally decided to break it
and coming into contact with the second one makes me feel super shitty!
Bumping this once more, I'm open to work (software engineering)! Both FTE or contract. Remote-friendly, I'm US-based. Rates, work history and more info at https://jacky.wtf/work

If a company involved in the provision of food, energy, and related necessities of living increases or even maintains its profits during a time of increases in the cost of living, that company has by definition committed an immoral act.

Open source is fundamentally about people. It's an important value to me to pay that forward and throw a few dollars when I can to these champions of our industry. I appreciate GitHub sponsorship & Open Collective for making it really easy to do so.
In the corporate world, it's my belief that organizations have a duty as well to harness their vast resources and pay these same maintainers their dues since they benefit the most off that labour.
The ADHD experience is having a growing collection of empty notebooks, pristine water bottles, and untouched to-do apps, each one a monument to good intentions.
So McDonald's is giving away free fries for the rest of the year...
... if you use their mobile app
... and agree to the updated terms and conditions
... which say: if you use this app you waive your right to trial in any class action lawsuits against McDonalds."
We live in the lamest dystopia.
The stuff that got edited out of Snow Crash.
If you finally found the solution to your coding problem in a deep comment or something after having dozens of tabs open, you should write about it in your own blog.
Really. Describe the problem in your own words and the solution for it, even if the solution seems really obvious now. Doesn’t matter. Give credit and whatever, but use your own words because you will be surprised at how many people will land on it.
Write the blog post you wish you had found.
So.. you are “just not that into politics?”
-Your Boss is
-Your Landlord is
-Your Insurance Company is
And everyday they use their political power to keep your pay low, raise rent, and deny you coverage.
It’s time to get into politics.
