 Note

Two years ago, I posted my salary history - in an impulsive move - and I absolutely do not regret it. I know directly of some the great impact having this data has had (including leading to others sharing their own), and I'm so glad to be able to use my privilege to help others

I'm so sorry to hear that, but glad to hear it's been a year of improvement, and I hope it continues that way 🤞🏽

Or is it maybe just Mozilla can't appreciate your talents?

Though it's tempting to get out the world's tiniest violin when Sam Bankman-Fried complains about his peanut butter sandwiches, it should make you wonder: if even he can't have his basic needs met in jail, what about the less privileged? https://newsletter.mollywhite.net/p/sam-bankman-frieds-jail-conditions #SBF #FTX #crypto #cryptocurrency #PrisonersRights

Beginning to think about how to approach #FOSDEM next year, as it's officially become an opportunity I can't miss. But I both value my health and can't take unnecessary risks with COVID, and I authored and signed the @phpledge@floss.social. I foresee lots of time spent bundled up outdoors, or maybe a fringe event. Maybe I can work with a subset of DevRoom organizers to put common sense precautions in place, such people like me can actually participate. Hmmm... 🤔

https://sauropods.win/@futurebird/111035301809333340 I don't think people realize just how much 'marketing gender' shapes our commercial world. This is the stuff of Gender: "Men" "Women" "Kids" This is why when you get the gender bit set as you browse the web without an ad blocker, ALL your ads change. Want to avoid cryptocurrency ads? Look up wedding stuff before visiting anything related to software development. Not to say you won't get even more horrifying things, but you will be coded as 'women'. Oh wait, I'm hearing _men get married too?_ that can't be right. Only women look at wedding things.

Attached: 1 image Parents should always take "awkward photos" of their kids, and show them off regularly. Though I'm sure I thought of this one as embarrassing at some point, I now love it — it's little me telling me I've got this in what looks like peak 90's clothing & pose, with a superlative confident grin 😄

DHH essentially saying code-of-conducts on projects he maintains don’t apply to him is deeply troubling. Yes, it’s “only” on how he rudely pushed through a controversial change this time but it exposes a “rules don’t apply to me” mentality that goes way beyond that. And a lot of younger men in the community look up to him and try to emulate him.

I wrote another newsletter entry at https://buttondown.email/jackyalcine/archive/ive-been-laid-off/. Taking this weekend to focus on important things but also to do something I do enjoy doing; and that's tinkering with side projects and/or reading some comics. Tonight, I'll be reading Avatar: The Last Airbender - The Search inbetween builds and when I want to take a little thinking break. I'll be working on making #Koype a bit more ready for me to talk about more concretely but from way down the pipe. Right now, I'm focusing on fixing up RPC logic. And yes, there's RPC in my blog setup because it's definitely a lot more than a blog (again, why I need to write more about this, lol). The process of me doing this today: is a bit manual (I write locally, tether over my phone to my laptop, make this post, write it in manual HTML in quill.p3k.io and make sure to syndicate it from my site (though that's just a button in Quill itself to enable). My hope is to write this from some native client on my desktop, pick up my phone - edit it and then open my website and see the final change there. That's because I want to get to a point where I don't have to be online to "blog" or just record my life to the extent that I want to. But again, relaxing. Part of relaxing is allowing myself to dream (lol) and… https://jacky.wtf/2023/9/GGtY

one of the onboarding projects for one of my coworkers was sun-setting a website. turn it into a static site, preserve the URLs, make it obvious that it's there for posterity but no longer being updated. years later she thinks that's one of the most satisfying feels: there is a process for letting things go. 🍂

People who keep shouting it's unethical to be on Twitter now I have some fucking questions. You still buying at fast fashion outlets? Driving cars? Flying in airplanes? You eating Tyson Chicken? Do you try to keep slave labor out of your coffee? Or do you just not like evil when it feels a little too in your face?

"Rockstar just proved how important piracy is for game preservation" https://www.dsogaming.com/news/rockstar-just-proved-how-important-piracy-is-for-game-preservation/ > Discovered by modder ‘Silent’, the Steam version of Midnight Club 2 is actually the version that the scene group “Razor 1911” cracked back in 2003. Let me repeat that. Rockstar was selling on Steam a cracked copy of its game. #digipres
