This is such a bad take. I don’t even know what you mean by business cycle, nor has that terminology ever come up in my decade in tech. I don’t think anyone that uses arbitrary requirements to define titles should be deciding who should be staff engineers.

I don't think anyone with 5 years of professional experience should be staff, no matter how talented they are. That's not even enough time to witness a business cycle. Not purely an age thing, but unless you entered industry in high school...

A few years ago I committed to saying sorry less and saying thank you more. Instead of saying “I’m sorry I’m late” trying “thank you for waiting for me”. It’s made each time I say sorry feel more meaningful and genuine. Also, I get to practice gratitude more often.
