If a dude can be CEO of three companies at the same time that just says to me CEO isn't a very demanding or important job.

Considering where the rest of the money is coming from and the timing of everything, it’s undoubtedly malicious. Think about how valuable destroying a major tool of communication is to those who wish to end the powerful democracy currently teetering on a knife’s edge.
Megan Sutherlin (@MeganSutherlin)Fri, 04 Nov 2022 06:11 GMT
you know the terrible truth is the most obvious replacement for Twitter would actually be Tumblr, the dashboard is basically a good timeline, you can reblog stuff and add your own comments, you can build communities but still be part of a wider whole website, etc etc

Can confirm this is the real Elon. Any bad things posted from this account are directly attributable to Elon’s verified account. twitter.com/ejwillingham/s…Twіtter API (@fake_api)Fri, 04 Nov 2022 15:56 GMT

Elon Musk firing half of Twitter by email because he overpaid for the company and has no credible idea what to do with it is insane

Twitter is a private company and First Amendment protections do not apply to it. The same goes for advertisers who vote with their money. In order to fix an issue, you need to understand its parameters. You clearly do not.
Andrew C Laufer, Esq (@lauferlaw)Fri, 04 Nov 2022 14:55 GMT
Wait a second, advertisers exercising their free speech by choosing not to spend money on your site and pressuring you to ensure moderation is kept is destroying free speech? Sounds like you are trying to destroy theirs.
Alejandra Caraballo 🐀 (@Esqueer_)Fri, 04 Nov 2022 14:54 GMT
No, Elon - Twitter has a massive drop in revenue because of PEOPLE EXERCISING THEIR FREE SPEECH about you joining the company, trolling the Pelosi family, talking about ‘free speech absolutism’ and there being a 500% increase in racial slurs in days after you arrived.
Tom Coates (@tomcoates)Fri, 04 Nov 2022 14:29 GMT
You tweeted a conspiracy theory from a website less credible than the National Enquirer like four days ago. We all need to look inward as well as outward.

By 9AM Pacific/Noon Eastern time tomorrow, Twitter employees will know if they're laid off or not depending on whether they get an email at their work (still have a job) or personal (fired) email. This approach is likely because everyone laid off will lose access to work email.Dare Obasanjo 🐀 (@Carnage4Life)Fri, 04 Nov 2022 01:21 GMT

I got the email... I still have a job but I stayed up last night watching hard-working, talented, caring people get logged out one by one and I don't know what to say. Tweeps, you are remarkable. #OneTeam #TwitterLayoffs (My colleague captured it perfectly)eli schutze🫡 (@elibelly)Fri, 04 Nov 2022 10:49 GMT
It is done. I’m incredibly proud of the @TwitterDev team(s), and the folks I’ve worked with across nearly 9 years to keep the API and developer platform vibrant. To those in our developer community: thank you. It was my honour to serve you.Andy Piper (@andypiper)Fri, 04 Nov 2022 08:48 GMT

The massive layoffs haven't quite happened yet but everyone at Twitter has already lost their job. The job they signed up for, they job they liked, the job with all the people they learned to work with and appreciate. It's a blank slate no matter which side you end up on

Here's the first official communication from Twitter's new leadership to its staff, a week after Musk took over: a fun game where you get to find out if you're laid off or not based by 9am tomorrow, based on whether the email pops up in your Twitter account or personal account.

the fact that the first thing tweeps did when layoffs were finally, officially announced was to send so many heart emojis that we broke slack says everything no one else knows about this place. #OneTeamEmily Fortner (@emcorinne)Fri, 04 Nov 2022 00:40 GMT
As a former SRE, I'd just like to say: This site isn't going to burn down. That's way too calm and organized a death for a site this big which apparently just fired most of the on-call staff.foone🏳️⚧️ (@Foone)Fri, 04 Nov 2022 07:16 GMT
"Tech workers who didn't live through the dot com crash, you have no idea what's coming. Prepare yourselves." This isn't actionable. People who don't know what's coming probably don't know how to prepare for it. Cool cool, Disney+ added a user agent check and blocks streaming on Linux, now, after engineers at the company previously ensured it works (since they use Linux!). Changing my user agent to Windows makes the service work again. What year is it, Disney?Cassidy James 🐘 (@CassidyJames)Thu, 03 Nov 2022 21:17 GMT

It's astounding how bad the web is without an ad blocker This tax on using the web, which funds most of it, pays most of the highest paid programmers ($750k/yr+), etc., doesn't impact programmers, who almost all use ad blockers The whole situation reminds me of the lottery taxDan Luu (@danluu)Mon, 29 Aug 2022 16:42 +0000
I want Mastodon to succeed, but there's a growing group of volunteer sysadmins now keeping the network afloat who are going to burn out.

There is nothing -- NOTHING -- so innovative, clever, or difficult, that you can *possibly* do, which will not be met with a scoffing "whatever, we don't need this, I could do that in a weekend" from some asshat on hacker news.
