We’re still trying to understand what the tech individual contributor ladder should look like. Different companies are using similar words for wholly different jobs. People are moving up the ladder by simply existing. And if you are starting today, nothing likely makes sense.

seeing a shitload of pictures of friends over the last two weeks wandering around conferences fully without a mask on, and predictably testing positive for covid when they get home.
Kat Cosgrove (@Dixie3Flatline)Wed, 20 Apr 2022 16:11 +0000
look I'm going back to in-person conferences too but can y'all please put a fucking mask on indoors?
Kat Cosgrove (@Dixie3Flatline)Wed, 20 Apr 2022 16:09 +0000
upsides to wearing a mask: i only have to put makeup on upper half of my face, no worrying about whether or not something's stuck in my teeth, able to lip sync in public without judgement, no pressure to fake smile at people as I pass them in the hallway, less likely to get covid

Here's your reminder that the whole idea of a personal carbon footprint was a targeted BP media campaign in 2005 and it worked so well that it seems like we've all forgotten this researchgate.net/publication/30…Ryan Orbuch (@orbuch)Mon, 05 Apr 2021 22:47 +0000

Libs of Tik Tok will try to get a teacher fired in one breath then complain about "cancel culture" when they're called out for it in the next.
Forrest Fujio-Gates (@Stiborge)Wed, 20 Apr 2022 02:01 +0000
Today 'LIbs of Tik Tok' gained 150,000 followers, started a Substack with a $50 subscription fee, began receiving a salary by the Babylon Bee to continue tweeting, and once again went on America's most-watched news show. And this shows how CANCEL CULTURE has gone WAY too far!!!!KnowNothing (@KnowNothingTV)Wed, 20 Apr 2022 01:54 +0000

A thing that shows the tech industry maturing is you don't see much - or at all - dunking on an outage/breach of a competitor. Instead, engineers at most competitors pay close attention, and try to learn from what happened, and stress-test & strengthen their own systems.Gergely Orosz (@GergelyOrosz)Wed, 20 Apr 2022 15:13 +0000

Woke simple means that you care about the well-being of people in marginalized communities. Being anti-woke means telling people that there are no marginalized people so just shut up about it because you're making me uncomfortable. This is why I am proudly woke.Matt Mullen (@knowwhatisreal)Wed, 20 Apr 2022 11:19 +0000

once I realized that cisgender people treat gender essentially as a very dogmatic and unquestioned religion, a lot of their hang ups, restricted thinking, and sense of unfathomable gender taboos instantly made a lot more sense to me

I cannot discourage you more from viewing this as a desirable career path. It might work for one or two rare people but between the lack of time spent building and the rapid growth in management it's as likely to result in a poor skill set than long term success

I worry that very soon wearing a mask will be seen as negativity/fear mongering & people will try to ban them. Folks want the ability to harm without feeling bad or being reminded of the harm. The responsibility of quieting that discomfort will fall on the people being cautious.

I think it is a mistake to tie career ladders to years of experience, and that instead they should be defined by the scope and scale of projects someone is able to execute independently on. Years of experience are meaningless, demonstrated competence is all that matters.twitter.com/lanooba/status…Post details
