Thoughts on perfectionism and burnout, and how to move away from an all or nothing mindset
After a 2 day hiatus from #NaBloPoMo, today's post is about breaking your streak, and fighting the perfectionist urge to give up altogether. https://amyhupe.co.uk/articles/youve-broken-your-streak/
Notes on burnout, from the depths of burnout.
You don’t have “burnout,” you have stress-induced neurological decline due to long-term brain damage. Giving it a cutesy name may help you discuss it amongst allies, but it will not demand the recognition you need from medical professionals, your peers, or those oppressing you.

A few days ago, a stressed-out gamer confessed on ResetERA he was considering giving up on gaming, as he felt the time spent could be put to “better” use. The thread somehow struck a chord here, not …(https://brainbaking.com/post/2023/03/continuous-productivity-is-toxic/)

👋🏽 I've definitely been through it a couple of times, and am pretty sure I'm in a small burnout phase too
Stop recommending therapy for burnout without acknowledging and addressing the institutional problems that cause burnout. You’re unfairly placing the onus on individuals for surviving in a hostile environment. Systemic change is the cure for burnout.Lawren is Openly Black (@pedsmd2b)Fri, 29 Apr 2022 20:52 +0000
The vocabulary we have around burn out is insufficient. It's often framed as too much work (which is definitely one factor), but I see it also stem from misalignment in terms of strategy or values, lack of recognition, and/or sense of belonging.Sarah Drasner (@sarah_edo)Fri, 15 Apr 2022 23:23 +0000
If we always approach problem solving from this perspective: it's from too much work => give them less work/time off we'll never really get to the crux of the problem. It's more nuanced than that.Sarah Drasner (@sarah_edo)Fri, 15 Apr 2022 23:24 +0000

Burnout is sneaky because you don’t realize you’re borrowing from tomorrow to push through today.

This week I took medical leave from work to take care of my burnout / mental health. I lost my capacity to take care of myself and enjoy the things I love the most. Now even after one week, I can barely concentrate on anything, even if it was supposed to be “fun”. #burnoutDaniela Petruzalek (@danicat83)Fri, 24 Dec 2021 14:07 GMT
We can’t build in public And burnout in private. This sets an unrealistic standard for all following us. Managing mental health and burnout is a big part of founder life.Amanda Goetz (@AmandaMGoetz)Tue, 14 Dec 2021 21:09 GMT

Originally I took a year long break from coding on the side because of feeling crushed & burned out at work. Now it’s the opposite, my brain is underestimated after work and wants even more challenges & daily wins. Does that mean I’m once again ready to start side projects? ✨Cake is Kate. why don’t any of the bad people have burnout

I used to be the type of person who, if time freed up, would replace it with more “productivity” lmao. But then I experienced burnout and learned about energy management. Now I’m about energy management > time management. Focus on the right things rather than the most things.

Burnout is less related to how much you’ve been doing but instead how much progress you’ve been making. When you start feeling burned out, try to figure out which lack of progress is affecting you. Is it your project? A coworker? Another team? Your leadership? Or your career?Dare Obasanjo (@Carnage4Life)Fri, 09 Jul 2021 18:12 +0000
I have trouble telling what other people mean by “burnout.” Most of the stuff I’ve seen had led me to believe it was a form of severe exhaustion (and somewhat transient). I have gradually come to understand it’s more like some part of you literally stops functioning.Emily Strickland (@emilyst@social.emilylilyli.me) (@emilyst)Tue, 29 Jun 2021 21:16 +0000

I wonder sometimes if the rampant burnout and anxiety we feel is because we don’t accept — nor truly believe — that thinking is work. But it is. And thinking can happen anywhere. At the gym. In bed. On a walk. In a sauna. At lunch. Ideas require quiet. Solutions too.emily freeman (@editingemily)Tue, 18 May 2021 16:43 +0000

My attention span is so shot. I literally cannot make it through a news article, and haven’t read a book or watched a whole tv series even since 2020. I can’t put the damn phone down. Is this happening to anyone else?

isn't it weird that burnout is a completely accepted part of our culture. like yeah your job will wring all the life out of you and leave you a hollow husk lol just take a day off and drink more water

Burnout sucks. There are a number of signs to pick up on it before it fully manifests which this article talks about. Having gone through it in the past, it's not something you want to go through, and can have some severely lasting effects that are hard to come back from.
