What if you had your lawyer & therapist w/ you in a job interview 🤔 Them: Tell me about a challenging time in yo… Lawyer, interrupting: My client pleads the 5th! Therapist: This is likely to trigger some trauma we’re still working through. Do you have another question?Kyle Shevlin (@kyleshevlin)Sat, 29 Jan 2022 16:41 GMT
For those who are unaware: Colorado passed a law requires companies to include salary ranges in job postings. Here’s an article about it google.com/amp/s/www.denv…

New rule: if a job posting says anything along the lines of “this is a remote job except that it is not eligible to be performed in Colorado”, 🚩🚩🚩 (This is not me looking for a job, I am happy where I am at. But we need to lay down some rules)Jessica Dembe 👩🏾💻 (@jmdembe)Tue, 25 Jan 2022 03:55 GMT
Give yourself full permission to interview your future managers back. When they ask "Do you have any questions for me," take the opportunity to expose what your next 1+ years under this person might be like. Here are 5 questions I have or wished I'd asked of my future managers:Lily Konings (@lilykonings)Fri, 21 Jan 2022 18:45 GMT
One of the interview questions I ask "How many times have you broke production?" and I pay close attention to their answer and how it was fixed. This is the one key ingredient to a senior developer.

What's your favorite question to ask when you finish an interview (as the interviewee)?
Dan Moore (@mooreds)Sun, 19 Dec 2021 16:32 GMT
Any interview question that relies on historical knowledge of how things were done before the current paradigm is a bad one. Just because you learned legacy thing first doesn’t make it a requirement for understanding the current functionality.Laurie (@laurieontech)Tue, 21 Dec 2021 00:56 GMT

I like how we do technical interviews at @gitlab. - Merge Request upfront to review as home exercise - Go through the review & implement suggestions Gives candidates enough time to prepare without a surprise. Focus on the technical discussion. Hopefully reduces stress.twitter.com/gergelyorosz/s…Post details
There's an even bigger issue with live coding than "just" the potential impact on diversity. If you do stressful live coding, you're excluding a massive population. Hi! 👋 Lots of recruiter emails & questions. Truthfully, I've been considering this decision for several weeks, and decided to use this opportunity to apply at >50< different organizations. Why? So I could see what the process is like for people these days. I've learned a lot.Cher Scarlett 💙 (@cherthedev)Thu, 18 Nov 2021 19:14 GMT

It's long past time for major companies to stop requiring degrees that are expensive and correlate primarily with parental wealth rather than actual ability.

I recently passed on a job offer after 4 rounds of interviews. This company only seemed interested in grilling me on my coding ability (all 4 interviews were technical, live coding sessions) and never asked about the hundred other things I do as part of my life as a dev.

When choosing a job, the salary is important. But not the most important thing. There are other things you should consider: • autonomy • flexibility • can you contribute to open-source? • room for career progression Take them into consideration when negotiating!Catalin Pit (@catalinmpit)Mon, 27 Sep 2021 15:31 +0000
The technical interview process gives a particularly large advantage to people who can afford to take the time to focus solely on preparing for an interview process that has very little to do with the nature of the work itself.

For the latest role we’re hiring for, I’m sending the interview questions to candidates ahead of time. Most roles don’t require working under pressure so why create pressure? I’d rather use our time to evaluate how folks prepare (arguably a greater skill).Allison Esposito Medina (@techladyallison)Tue, 18 May 2021 21:07 +0000

Things I do as a technical interviewer: 1. State this is a conversation, not a test 2. Let the candidate look up APIs 3. Tell them when they do a great job 4. Problem solve together 5. Now then, to get the job you'll be graded on a series of skills that will not be touched upon ever again for your entire tenure here; some of our interview questions technically qualify as hazing.HydroxyCoreyQuinn (@QuinnyPig)Wed, 26 Aug 2020 18:46 +0000
