Morning Moomins! How come everyone I follow has snow, but I do not? I want a snow day so I can call up work and say I can't come in.Terence Eden (@edent)Tue, 29 Dec 2020 08:55 GMT
I'll be honest, it was a relief to be using a laptop for anything other than Zoom!

What 2020 has taught me: Iโm okay attending meetings in my sweatpants, with no makeup, and my cat. Iโm liking this new version of myself ๐โโ๏ธEmma Bostian ๐ (@EmmaBostian)Thu, 17 Dec 2020 09:51 GMT

I can't believe Zoom gives away their best feature, limiting meetings to 40 minutes, for free.

Donโt think of it as working from home, think of it as living at work, itโs much more depressing that way

doing an @ everyone in a slack channel with over 5000 people should be grounds for having your hard drive confiscated tbh

Thanks to Joe Nash for sharing this yesterday, I 100% agree with this - not just on the blogumentation angle, but because making these things visible is really important. And especially now, where every company is a remote company, it makes sense to start building these into your ways of working.
no you are on mute! Press the mic button.. THE MIC BUTTON not the video one. nope you gone, we will call you right back.Tim Nash (@tnash)Mon, 14 Sep 2020 08:24 +0000
In Wales, weโre asking you to keep working from home if you can. We think this is an opportunity for a permanent change. Our aim is for 30% of workers to work from or near home. This will reduce traffic, support local businesses and provide flexibility. What do you think?Welsh Government (@WelshGovernment)Sun, 13 Sep 2020 10:15 +0000
I got a bright green shirt and sat in a 40 minute zoom meeting until it was time to say goodbye and then did this:

The number one rule on zoom is ... you're an invited guest into someone else's home. If the kids invade then - they absolutely have the right to. It's their home as well. You can't import corporate "norms" into someone else's home. Learn to adapt.

Can anyone recommend some good ways to encourage people to turn their webcams on during meetings?

I've just realised something I adore about Endless Video Callsโข. I am *useless* at remembering people's names. I'm utterly hopeless. I used to joke that it would be brilliant if everyone I worked with wore prominent name badges. Now, thanks to video calls, they all do!Terence Eden (@edent)Thu, 16 Jul 2020 20:32 +0000
Best thing about Bluetooth headphones and #RemoteWork? Being able to run for a quick wee mid-meeting, and no one knows
This happens at least once a week to me, and it is something to celebrate. I love having my children barge into my Zoom meetings and I love how my colleagues always handle it. @IAmCapitalOnePost details

I can see an argument for both sides on this issue, but Facebook deciding one way made it incredibly crystal clear that the opposite side was morally correct.

Paying remote workers differently solely depending on their zip code is immoral. If you can afford to hire from both San Francisco and St Louis, you can afford to pay both the same for the same work. If you can't afford SF rates, that's fine too! blairreeves.me/2020/05/22/payโฆDHH (@dhh)Mon, 25 May 2020 16:50 +0000

As of today, Shopify is a digital by default company. We will keep our offices closed until 2021 so that we can rework them for this new reality. And after that, most will permanently work remotely. Office centricity is over.

I'm running some 'virtual social' events. Partly for fun, partly to see how various video platforms cope with lots of people, and give us all a place to test webcams and microphones and stuff. Who's up for a Zoom Lunch Meetup tomorrow, 13:00 UK time? DM me for info + invitations!

One tip for people working remotely who were previously working from the office: In every single message, assume there is a smiley ":)" at the end. If you don't do it, anything you read might feel different depending on how you interpret it. You're welcome :)Fatih Arslan (@fatih)Wed, 11 Mar 2020 12:07 GMT
