I want to ask prospective employers what their technical debt management work flow looks like but I don't know if I'm ready to watch a stranger cry.

Tech debt is a term that often catches people out. Here are some ways to make sure you avoid falling into that trap!
The best way I've found to talk about tech debt respectfully is to just say "smart people in a hurry made this" It's there because it solved a problem. My theory of tech debt is that housework is the correct metaphor for the thing we call tech debt, but we can't use it because tech has been made up of people who don't do housework, or manage housework being done.
