Week Notes 24#28

  • Returning to work to ~220 emails, and a 99+ notification badge on Slack πŸ˜…
    • Was a busy Monday prepping for a meeting later that day, and catching up on the important things
    • And then another day to finally make my way through the most important ones, and completely down to normal levels of notifications by the end of Wednesday
  • Had a good hour with Shay and his team at Orca Security, chatting about Engineering Productivity with insight from Elastic and Deliveroo
  • We got tickets to see Kings of Leon on Monday, which was great!
    • We'd not realised The Vaccines were the support act, nor did we think that it wouldn't start immediately at 1830, so bit of a rookie error
    • Got a rather weighty pick-n-mix sweet bag which was fun, tasty, and kept us going!
    • Unfortunately we didn't get a chance to stay for the encore, as we'd left Cookie a bit too long and she was strugglign
  • Google Home have re-added the remote control, after I found that I could also use the Google TV app
  • Not a fan of some recent Firefox Android changes
  • We had Cookie in daycare on Wednesday as it was time for the gardeners (very much needed) and she had a great day running around
    • It's amazing how much impact they made within the first half hour, let alone 2 hour slot
    • Morph, aka "Mr Screamykins" was very much enjoying Cookie being out, so he could come upstairs to see us, and as his name suggests, screaming at the top of his lungs at us πŸ˜…
    • Not sure what he was so adamant about, but he wanted us to know
    • He's not usually allowed upstairs, by us or Cookie, but was nice cause he kept telling us where he was πŸ™ƒ
  • Which also was nice because that night, Cookie was very brave for a top up on her vaccines
  • Had a good time at the OpenUK Digital meetup - unfortunately Lorna wasn't able to co-host, but feel it went well, and Dawn and James were great
    • Morph decided to come and be extra needy, sitting between my keyboard and me, slightly kneading on my belly
  • We've finally caved and bought a TV license
    • Partly for the Euros final tonight, but also because we've got a number of other things we do want to watch, but it's a shame it's so expensive, and they're so aggressive about it
  • Walked over to Forest Rec for some fresh air, a walk for Cookie and a cake from Homemade - had a πŸ˜‹ Eton Mess cake
    • Especially good after having a good Eton Mess at Ragdale hall, and remembering I very much like it
  • Got some spam through to the email I use with the Linux Foundation - lucky guess? Maybe a leak?
  • Had a fun Arch issue on my work laptop where I couldn't install new packages, as I was somehow missing debugedit - not sure if it was a requirement that came in recently and maybe was expected me to have already had it (from install time) but once I worked it out, was up and running
  • Friday afternoon was purely working on oapi-codegen maintenance, which Elastic have been very generous to have given me 4 hours a month for
    • I'd hoped that I'd get through the backlog of v2.4.0, but dang did it take long just to look through a few of the issues
    • Hopefully will get some more time soon to go through the rest of them, I know things are piling on (and people are @-ing me)
  • On Friday, I almost had one of my headphones under another car at the park, when I was taking it out post-walk
    • Made worse by the risk of travelling without them, I contorted and squeezed myself under their car to get it, and thankfully did not get Enigma of Amigara Fault'd
  • Friday night I headed to London ahead of my cousin Ravi's wedding on Saturday
  • Had a very productive train journey, writing 89 things I know about Git commits
    • This was really fun not least because I got a chance to contradict myself a number of times in the post, which was fun
    • It only had 4 upvotes by the time I went to sleep, but was up to ~50 in the morning, and hit 100 by the end of the day
  • Was nice to stay with Cat and Bernard and see lil' Luna ahead of her 8th birthday today πŸ™€
  • Was a beautiful wedding, they both seemed very happy, we got to catch up with some of the family, and the food was lovely
  • Got a nice welcome from Cookie πŸ₯°
  • I've definitely been overworking this week, ahead of an upcoming deadline, and a few things not progressing (out of our control) in the background, which then led to me working a little bit extra across timezones to pick up the slack, alongside also already working my day - need to be careful!
  • Remembered that I'll be finding out in a couple of weeks if I'm going to be running a workshop ("sandbox session") at GitHub Universe, so ended up doing some mental planning for what the workshop will look like πŸ‘€
  • reddit was down for a bit while writing these 😱
  • We don't know how, but Cookie seems to be a magnet for grass seeds this week - she's somehow getting them even when she's in her harness on a pavement walk 😹
  • Did the Tidelift survey - excited for the hoodie and t-shirt πŸ‘€
  • Managed to make my way through the OpenUK survey

In dependency-management-data:

  • Improved the memory usage of import renovate, after determining that we've been hitting GitHub Actions memory limits at work (🫣)
  • Setting up Mastodon release announcements πŸ‘πŸΌ
  • Looking at how to add End-of-Life data to internal dependencies - was a good thing to play around with on the train, as well as give me some areas to improve on for the authoring process
    • Also given me more understanding of how OPA works
    • And I may have got myself IP blocklisted by endoflife.date (rightfully so) after I realised I'd not set up caching for one of the tests I did 😬 But looks like it's lifted now

Played:

  • Apex Legends
  • Ratchet and Clank: Tools of Destruction

Watched:

  • The Acolyte
  • New Amsterdam
    • Hit the COVID season, and oof it's a little heavier than the previous ones (not that they were particularly light)
  • Only Murders in the Building
  • Euro finals: England vs Spain
    • Spain deserved to win it after that game!
  • Saturday Night Live (on YouTube)
