Week Notes 24#50

  • A good week at work on a hackathon, towards providing a similar "Open Source Dependency Dashboard" similar to Microsoft folks mentioned on the CHAOSS podcast
    • We've made good progress towards adding a CI check that scans for dependency changes - via renovate-packagedata-diff - that then links out to an internal dashboard that provides Elastic-specific info on dependencies
    • In particular, last week's finalised work towards renovate-packagedata-diff helped out massively
    • The --json flag, and the excellent, hand rolled, JSON Schema was very good for integrating with a Typescript codebase (that could generate types)
    • Made a well-documented, dynamically generated pipeline for Buildkite pipelines (which we use)
    • Made 3 releases of renovate-graph and 4 of renovate-packagedata-diff
      • Including a last minute release to renovate-graph, based on a refactor that happened upstream in renovate that ended up breaking renovate-graph in a really subtle way
    • Fought Next.JS, React, Typescript, ESlint and Elastic UI (EUI) while trying to integrate in "dashboard"-y pre-built elements much to my frustration and largely because I'm not at all used to the ecosystem
  • Was a big relief that I could make it a "headphones on" kinda week, and mute Slack and focus on the hackathon
    • Got to a good place despite a number of distractions for us on the team
  • Tried the KFC stuffing burger, which was nice, but not as nice as last year's
  • Not quite finished a blog about setting up a Typescript + Lerna, based on the work to bootstrap our repo this week for the hackathon
  • Talking about Steampipe at work, and revisiting a half-written post (that I should finish)
  • Had a nice catch-up with Gareth
  • Continuing to improve my "Music in Review" scripts, which I'm hoping to have in a good place before the new year, so my next post can be updated (as well as updating the previous ones)
  • Had a nice catch-up with Dom
  • Saw Jimmy Carr on Wednesday - mostly a good night, some jokes didn't land well, but was fun
  • Somehow I noticed that i3lock has been uninstalled on my desktop, so locking it weirdly wasn't working (just before we ran off to Jimmy Carr)
  • One of my colleagues noted that my "Why I prefer Renovate" post was on the front page of Google (even Incognito) for a query he was searching for πŸš€
  • A nice weekend at my parents'
    • Had a chilled time, but missed Cat
    • Cookie was mostly well behaved and is so sleepy this evening now we're home
    • Downloaaded the Taskmaster podcast for the journey down, but didn't end up listening
    • The drive home was definitely interesting to see my focus lacking a little
  • Think my Cobra + OTel post was in another newsletter this week - based on some traffic that's suddenly been appearing
  • Considering the domain name - that I want - for the (probably proprietary) product around DMD, but is unfortunately taken (but not in use, AFAICT)

Watched:

  • Taskmaster
  • Violent Night
  • Operation Christmas Drop
  • Umm Actually
