Week Notes 25#05

These Week Notes almost weren't going to get written tonight - I've been recovering from pretty bad flu, and have been intentionally off my laptop/etc

I'll be doing a full write-up about State of Open Con, which was the main event this week, in the coming days (I thought I'd have it done by now, but flu πŸ€’) but the top things to share right now:

  • My talk went well, but the plenaries before my talk overran, and, being the first talk of the day not in the "main room", it was also quite hard to find, so attendance was fairly low. It was also clashing with a number of other great keynotes, but still a bit of a shaem - hopefully folks will catch up when it's on YouTube
  • Met some new and old friends, which was nice
  • Attended some very good talks, and had some good chats with folks
  • Was nice to be interviewed by Richard Speed from The Register about maintainer burnout!
  • On Wednesday evening - getting back from State of Open Con - my throat was feeling a bit rough, but thought it was cause of lots of speaking
  • Turns out, I've picked up a pretty awful flu:
    • Took off Friday as I was feeling very very awful, and needed to focus on feeling better
    • I've had a horrible mix of differing temperatures, an awful cough (triggered from breathing vaguely deeply, or speaking more than a handful of words), a sniffly nose and being physically sensitive and overly tired
    • I've not been able to eat very easily (cause of phlegm in my stomach making things feel weird) and so sleep's been very interrupted
    • I've very intentionally been off my laptop + desktop (as well as podcasts + tech articles) while I've been ill, trying to truly disconnect, which has helped
    • Not convinced I'm gonna be in the office tomorrow either, given how I'm feeling tonight
  • Cookie's been a little poorly this end of the week too, not really eating and being lethargic, but she's been very cute and cuddly
  • Saw Neeshu and Anubhav for dinner which was really nice, and a lovely dinner, and managed to sign some documents much easier than last time's chaos 🫣
  • Learned about the Manoski Pain Scale
  • Started creating a Neovim plugin for autocompleting links to my blog posts
  • Done a lot of Wiki reading for Star Trek and Bionicle
  • My go tool post appeared in Go Nugget, too
  • A bit of a disappointing start to the week, hearing it's a "no" to promotion (second review in a row) but hoping to focus in on some new requirements with my manger

Watched:

  • Saturday Night Live (on YouTube)
  • Robot Chicken (on YouTube)
  • Smartypants presentations (on YouTube)
  • Key and Peele (on YouTube)
  • (a snippet of) Pacific Rim (on YouTube)
  • Sisters
  • Life in Pieces
    • Especially after seeing the parents in Sisters, and we'd been thinking of rewatching it for a bit
  • Total Recall (1990)
    • Was interesting seeing the actor who plays Gul Dukat (in DS9), also being a bad guy here
  • Total Recall (2012)
    • Enjoyed the "two weeks" throwback
  • Spy
  • Elysium
  • A lot of trailers (on YouTube) including the more recent Marvel ones and Mickey 17 which looks interesting
