Week Notes 25#07

  • Appeared in A Semana Go and Architecture Nugget, and saw some traffic via Twitch, too
  • Booked a week away for my birthday πŸš€
  • Upgraded my GPU - went from my Titan X (Pascal) (that I bought with my starting bonus at Capital One) and upgraded to an AMD 7900 XTX (NITRO+ AMD Radeonβ„’ RX 7900 XTX Vapor-X 24GB)
    • Was a little bit worried that it was a scam - given how sparse the cards are (especially this one, given it's the "best") and I didn't receive any tracking details until very late
    • I've always had my GPU installed at an odd angle (so it can fit in the PCIe port), and it turns out it's because I never installed motherboard standoffs
      • And I definitely didn't want my new GPU to be at an angle
      • But I'm also very lucky it's not ended up shorting my motherboard over the years 🫣
    • Had to effectively reinstall my whole PC, needing to take out the drive caddy (as the new card is extra long) and I obviously didn't measure it or prep at all πŸ˜… as well as needing to add the standoffs, which meant I needed to install everything
    • Had the fun of some power cables not being fully connected, too, and a lot of "is the PC going to boot this time"
    • It's funny that the GPU is now a lot louder when gaming, which is somewhat distracting
    • When I fitted it, I noticed that my watercooler wasn't properly installed either πŸ˜… (for a couple of years)
    • My PC is now booting a lot quicker, surprisingly
    • Was funny that I finished setting up my Linux + Ollama setup before trying to make sure that I was able to play games properly
    • But when I did get around to trying to game, my PC wouldn't boot, as the CPU was overheating and turns out that as well as the watercooler not being fully installed, it's also that the thermal paste needs a refresh
  • The new season of Apex Legends has been very fun so far - I've found (solo) I'm shredding a lot of three-person squads, and the Mythic R301s are a lot of (overpowered) fun
  • Spent this weekend playing with trying to get a Stylus UserCSS / Tampermonkey script set up to make a better visualisation for non-default permissions, but fighting trying to intercept events on GitHub's React app
  • Raised a fix to the Deliveroo engineering blog, as I notice they've done a redesign (and yay for them getting back to adding content, I was gutted to see no updates after I'd left), but the fonts for code aren't sans-serif, which ain't good
  • Got perfect Asda pizza πŸ•πŸ˜‹
  • On Friday night we saw Katherine Ryan, who was very good and funny, and was nice to bump into Carol and Rachel, too!
  • Had a nice Sunday lunch with Anna's parents πŸ˜‹
  • At work, it's been nice working on a few DMD-y things with Nikos
  • Had a good mid-week Rakki Rakkas that was so good πŸ˜‹
  • Caught up with a number of my messages, emails and had a nice catch-up with Dom and Gareth
  • Wrote up my thoughts about OSS funding, and had some good conversations off the back of it
  • Been doing a bit more with Ollama, given my new GPU
  • Been listening to a lot of The Delta Flyers podcast, which I've been enjoying and getting a chance to relive Star Trek: Voyager
  • Enjoying the new costume system in Cat Snack Bar
  • Cookie's spent the last couple of minutes finding the perfectly comfy section of blanket to lie on, and as soon as I closed my laptop, she leapt up to go out πŸ₯Ί

Watched:

  • Life in Pieces
  • Archer
  • Reacher
    • Great start to Season 3!
